The relationship between nurses' caring behavior and the level of patient family satisfaction in the intensive care unit of PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital, Yogyakarta

This study aimed to determine the relationship between nurses’ caring behavior and the level of patient family satisfaction in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital Yogyakarta, specifically to identify nurses’ caring behaviors and the satisfaction levels of patients’ families. This quantitative study used a cross-sectional design with a population of 24 families of ICU patients selected through accidental sampling. The independent variable was nurses’ caring behavior, while the dependent variable was patient family satisfaction. Data were collected using the Caring Behavior Inventory (CBI) and the Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire (PSQ), and analyzed using the Spearman rank test. The results showed that most nurses (75%) demonstrated positive caring behaviors, and 75% of patient families reported good satisfaction levels. The Spearman rank test revealed a p-value of 0.03 (<0.05), indicating a significant relationship between nurses’ caring behavior and patient family satisfaction, with a correlation coefficient (r = 0.424) showing a moderate positive relationship. This means that the more positive the nurses’ caring behavior, the higher the satisfaction of the patients’ families. In conclusion, there is a significant positive relationship between nurse caring behavior and patient family satisfaction in the ICU of PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital Yogyakarta. It is recommended that the ICU continues to improve professional nursing services by consistently implementing caring behavior principles. Strengthening caring attitudes among nurses can enhance family satisfaction, leading to better service quality and ensuring patient-centered care standards.
